Top 10 Reasons To Hire Portable Toilets for Your Construction Site

No matter the size of your construction site (whether a huge project with hundreds of employees or building a conservatory in someone’s back garden with 2), portable toilets are necessary and come with a whole load of benefits for you and your employees. Most sites are built on new ground and do not have access to a running water supply meaning getting a portable toilet is unavoidable.

As the UK’s leading suppliers of portable toilets and welfare units, we here at Davlav are experts in the field and specialise in portable toilets and sanitation with over 27 years’ experience in the industry.

We will look through all the benefits that hiring a portable toilet can bring to your site highlighting why they are so important and should not be overlooked.

  1. Staff Satisfaction & Productivity Levels

If there are no toilet facilities available to workers on site, they will have to go elsewhere and leave the site whenever they need a bathroom break. This will cost them and you time as they look to find the nearest public bathroom whether that be in a library or supermarket in some cases could even cost them money if the nearest toilet charges for entry. This is not the case if there are toilets readily available for them whenever they need on site, this itself will improve productivity as they will not need to travel for the toilet.

Staff satisfaction will improve with this too as they feel like they have their own space and are not made to go on a scavenger hunt if they need the toilet. Staff satisfaction levels also have links to increased productivity in the workplace, further helping towards finishing your project on time or better yet early.

  1. Hygiene & Sanitation

These toilets should be regularly checked up on and cleaned, keeping them well maintained helps to keep the hygiene and sanitation levels of your site to a high standard for your staff and for any potential visitors or inspections. They will stop employees from going to the toilet elsewhere on site which will make the place unhygienic and unsafe, which could lead to unwanted bacteria and diseases.

All our products come with the option of weekly servicing to ensure the toilets are emptied and kept as hygienic as possible.

  1. Legal Requirements

Of course, all depending on the size and kind of site you operate, but the law legally requires you to supply toilet and hygiene facilities for your staff. There are several requirements that must be met, for example the number of toilets required will vary depending on the members of staff. The official HSE government guidelines for minimum toilets required are as followed:

Table 1 – Is the number of toilets and washbasins for mixed use (or women only)

Number of people at work Number of toilets Number of washbasins
1-5 1 1
6-25 2 2
26-50 3 3
51-75 4 4
76-100 5 5

Table 2 – Toilets used by men only:

Number of men at work Number of toilets Number of urinals
1-15 1 1
16-30 2 1
31-45 2 2
46-60 3 2
61-75 3 3
76-90 4 3
91-100 4 4

This is shown on the website here.

  1. Convenience

They are convenient for you and your staff as you do not need to commit to a permanent static block being built. Due to their portable nature they can be transported around site with ease to wherever they are not in the way. They can be accessed always of the day, perfect for when work is continued on the site throughout the night. They are easily set up and removed saving you a lot of hassle not having to worry. Maintaining these to a clean level is also super easy and takes a lot less time than cleaning a regular toilet.

  1. Visitor’s

Your site will inevitably have visitors whether that’s contractor’s or inspector’s. It is important for them to be able to access toilet facilities if they require. You may even want to have a toilet set aside for visitor use only, this could be one of our more luxury options if wanting to leave a good impression on them.

  1. Environment

Everyone is looking to reduce their carbon footprint and do their bit to help the environment. No matter how big or small the impact, it all helps. Portable toilets are a good way of doing this, they can help in several ways. They do not have much impact on the environment with them not wasting running water.

  1. Covid

We are living through a pandemic all learning to live with and adapt to Covid with the various rules and regulations. These rules are to keep everybody safe such as social distancing and wearing masks. This could even have an effect when choosing to hire toilets, more toilets may be needed in order to avoid any queues or congestion around the area. The toilets will also need to be cleaned and emptied more often. A one-way system should also be implemented so that staff do not have to pass each other.

At Davlav we have several different toilet options that can help fight Covid along with our other products such as hand washing and sanitising stations. We have also created a whitepaper ‘Protecting our Construction Industry’ with tips on how to keep your site Covid safe. This is summarised in our blog post ‘6 ways how you can create a Covid Safe construction site for everyone’ which you can view here.

  1. Clients Privacy

This would apply to a smaller site that would be attached to or a part of residential property. For example a house having an extension built. Having a portable toilet on site will mean your site will not have to disturb the client by asking to use their toilet facilities(and potentially bring in dust and debris). This is especially important due to Covid as it would not be safe for them to let staff into their house.

  1. Accessibility

It should be noted that especially with a big site, it is also worth making sure you have toilets available for everyone. Such as access to disabled toilets whether it be for any staff member or visitors it will be extremely appreciated.

  1. Portable

Portable toilets take up very little space and most importantly are portable so can be placed wherever best suited on site. There is a whole range of different types of portable toilets you can get that Davlav supply. Including; regular ones, disabled toilets, mains connected with warm water along with different toilet blocks, with multiple toilets inside.
