5 Factors you should consider when hiring an LED flood light
Davlav have had years of experience supplying construction sites with all of their needs including portable single use toilets, mobile staff canteens, welfare units, hand washing stations and a lot more. Flood lights are artificial lights that can light up large areas with their high intensity beams distributing light and illuminating whole environments. Due to this they became popularised by outdoor sporting events using them to be able to play outside of daylight hours. They are used commercially and domestically, some of the places include; theatres, gardens, car parks, events, sporting stadiums and courts, parks and not to mention construction sites. Below I have created a list of 5 factors that are needed to be considered when choosing a flood light and why LEDs are a better choice than the other alternatives. - Types of Flood Lights
Traditionally most outside flood lights have not been LED but rather Halogen. There are also other types such as CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lamps), Metal Halide or SON (high-pressure sodium lamps) Lights. All of these have their own set of advantages and disadvantages. For example, Halogens consume a huge amount of energy and can flicker and be noisy but create very vivid and accurate colour renderings. CFL’s are noiseless, flickering free but have a long warm up time and do not fare well in cold temperatures. LED’s however seem to come out on top with them slowly becoming the most commonly used floodlights due to them being the most efficient, having long life spans, produce the same amount of light, faring well in the cold, being flicker and noise free and can withstand shocks and vibrations.
- Their Use
When considering buying or hiring a flood light it is important to identify what it is going to be used for as using a floodlight for construction will have a different use than using a floodlight for a sporting event such as a football ground. A construction site will want to illuminate the biggest area possible (the whole site) for the workers to see whereas a football ground will want to focus all the light down onto just the pitch making the pitch the focus. A theatre for example may want more stylised lighting. Sports fields have more commonly chosen metal halide lamps for their flood lights but have too now started to convert to LED’s with the first sports field (Taunton Vale Sports Club) converting to LED on the 6th September 2014.
The location and its size need to also be considered, as it is important that the beams of light emitted do not intrude on neighbouring property, or a road which could impair a driver’s vision and be a hazard. As if your lighting is reported and seen to be a nuisance by the local council, they can hand out an abatement notice (a warning). It is important to figure out where the flood light will be placed within the location as there could be obstacles obstructing it E.G. other equipment or vehicles. The position it is placed will also affect how much light is emitted and to where it is. Luckily Davlav’s X-Eco Lighting Towers are towable and compact meaning they will not take up much space and finding the right position shouldn’t be an issue. The height of the towers can be adjusted which in turn will adjust the size of the light produced below making it easier to avoid spillages to neighbours or roads.
LED flood lights are by far the most energy efficient being 80 – 90% more than halogen bulbs. They are the most cost effective with them lasting 10 times longer meaning they need to be replaced a lot less often. They also help towards increasing the time workers can work, with them now being able to through the night and in non-daylight hours. The X-Eco Lighting Towers have a 200-hour run time (increase of 400%) extending the refuelling period and reducing on site labour costs. They have start/stop motion sensors, only being on when necessary which in turns reduces more fuel and activity costs. Compared to a traditional 4 x 1000W metal halide lighting tower they will save £336 per month in fuel cost. They also reduce CO2 emissions by 888 Kg per month (more than 70%). Safety is always a variable that needs considerations, of course flood lights themselves provide safety and security with workers being able to work out of daylight hours with being able to comfortably see what they are doing. The X-Eco Lighting towers are extremely secure with an AMOS safety system installed ensuring the mast is automatically lowered if moved, this prevents the mast from potentially hitting anything and getting damaged such as overhead power cables.
